Agra, The City of Love:

Agra (pronounced [ɑːɣrə] (help·info)) (Hindi: आगरा, Urdu: آگرا) is a city on the banks of the Yamuna River in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, India. It finds mention in the epic Mahabharata when it was called Agrabana, or Paradise. Ptolemy, the famous 2nd century geographer, marked it on his map of the world as Agra. Tradition and legend ascribe the present city of Raja Badal Singh (around 1475) whose Fort, Badalgarh, Stood on or near the site of the present Fort. However, the 12th century Persian poet Salman writes of a desperate assault on the fortress of Agra, then held by one King Jaipal, by Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni.[1] It was ruled by Sultan Sikandar Lodi in the year 1506. It achieved fame as the capital of the Mughal emperors from 1526 to 1658 and remains a major tourist destination because of its many splendid Mughal-era buildings, most notably the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri, all three of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Getting In

By Air

Agra Airport at Kheria is around 6 KM from the city centre, but is not very well connected. Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi is the best option. Agra is very well connected to Delhi both by Rail and Road.

By Rail

Agra is on the main train line between Delhi (Station Code : NDLS) and Mumbai (Bombay) (Station Code : CSTM) and between Delhi and Chennai (Station Code : MAS)

Idgah Bus Stand is the biggest Bus Stand in Agra and is connected to most of the bigger cities in North India.

Climate:

Agra, located on the Indo-Gangetic plain has a continental sub-tropical climate, with long, hot summers from April to September when temperatures can reach as high as 45°C (113°F). During summers dry winds (loo) blow in this region. The monsoon months from July to September see about 67 cm (27 inches) of rainfall annually. Winters last from November to February, with day time temperatures comfortably warm, but temperatures below freezing are not uncommon during the night. Agra is also prone to dense fog during the winter month of December & January.

A major tourist destination, Agra is best visited in the months of October and November, and February and March, when the average temperatures are between 16-25°C (60-75°F) The monsoon season should be avoided by non-Indians due to the risk of disease and flooding, the months of April to June due to the extreme heat. The months of December and January are to be avoided due to the dense fog and often freezing temperatures, especially since much of the city has no heating system.

Taj Mahal

Agra's Taj Mahal is one of the most famous buildings in the world, the mausoleum of Shah Jahan's favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It is one of the New 7 Wonders of the world, and one of three World Heritage Sites in Agra, the others being Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri.

Completed in 1653 CE., the Taj Mahal is believed to have been built by the Mughal Badshah (king) Shah Jahan as the final resting place for his beloved wife, Mumtaz. Finished in marble, it is perhaps India's most fascinating and beautiful monument. This perfectly symmetrical monument took 22 years (1630-1652) of hard labour and 20,000 workers, masons and jewellers to build and is set amidst landscaped gardens. Built by the Persian architect, Ustad Isa, the Taj Mahal is on the bank of the Yamuna River. It can be observed like a mirage from the Agra Fort from where Emperor Shah Jahan stared at it, for the last eight years his life as a prisoner of his son Aurangzeb. It is a masterpiece of symmetry, seeming to be floating in the air from a distance, and each revealed as an illusion experienced as one enters through the main gate. Verses of the Holy Koran are inscribed on it and at the top of gate 22 small domes, signifying the number of years the monument took to build. The Taj Mahal was built on a marble platform that stands above a sandstone one. The most elegant dome of the Taj, with a diameter of 60 feet (18 m), rises 80 feet (24 m) over the building and directly under the dome is the tomb of Mumtaz Mahal. Shah Jahan's tomb was erected next to hers by his son Aurangzeb. Fantastic inlay works using semi-precious stones decorate the interiors.

The 'Itmad-Ul-Daulah at Agra'

Empress Nur Jehan built Itmad-Ud-Daulah's Tomb, sometimes called the Baby Taj, for her father, Ghias-ud-Din Beg, the Chief Minister of Emperor Jahangir. Located on the left bank of the Yamuna river, the mausoleum is set in a large cruciform garden criss-crossed by water courses and walkways. The mausoleum itself is set on a base about 50 meters square and about 1 meter high. The mausoleum is about 23 meters square. On each corner are hexagonal towers, about 13 meters tall. Small in comparison to many other Mughal-era tombs, it is sometimes described as a jewel box. Its garden layout and use of white marble, pietra dura, inlay designs and latticework presage many elements of the Taj Mahal.

The walls are white marble from Rajasthan encrusted with semi-precious stone decorations - cornelian, jasper, lapis lazuli, onyx, and topaz in images of cypress trees and wine bottles, or more elaborate decorations like cut fruit or vases containing bouquets. Light to the interior passes through delicate jali screens of intricately carved white marble.

Agra Fort

Another world heritage site in Agra. Agra's dominant structure, the Agra Fort (sometimes called the Red Fort), was built by Akbar in 1565. Be Noted that a Stone Plate located at the Gate of Fort describes it to be built before 1000 and later renovated by Akbar. The red sandstone fort was renovated and converted into a palace during Shah Jahan's time, and reworked extensively with marble and pietra dura inlay. Notable buildings in the fort include the Pearl Mosque, the Diwan-e-Am and Diwan-e-Khas (halls of public and private audience), Jehangir's Palace, Khaas Mahal, Sheesh Mahal (mirrored palace), and Musamman Burj.

The great Mughal Emperor Akbar commissioned the construction of the Agra Fort in 1565 CE., although additions were made till the time of his grandson Shah Jahan. The forbidding exteriors of this fort hide an inner paradise. The fort is crescent shaped, flattened on the east with a long, nearly straight wall facing the river. It has a total perimeter of 2.4 k.m., and is ringed by double castellated ramparts of red sandstone punctuated at regular intervals by bastions. A 9 mt. wide and 10 mt. deep moat surround the outer wall.

Akbar's Tomb, Sikandra

Sikandra, the last resting place of the Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great, is on Delhi-Agra Highway, is only 13 kilometres from the Agra Fort. Akbar's tomb reflects the completeness of his personality. The vast, beautifully carved, red-ochre sandstone tomb with deers, rabbits and langoor monkeys is set amidst a lush garden. Akbar himself planned his own tomb and selected a suitable site for it. To construct a tomb in one's lifetime was a Tartary custom which the Mughals followed religiously. Akbar's son Jahangir completed the construction of this pyramidal tomb in 1613.

Jama Masjid

Jami Masjid Mosque is a very simple mosque of red sandstone with little white marble decoration and blue colour paint wall and ceilings. It’s a huge mosque in the center of Agra surrounded by a great bazaar. The mosque was completely empty of any tourist, only one man praying and the little children at the Madrasa (Koran school). The Mosque Stands on a high plinth approached by stairs, and with five arched entrances to the courtyard, the mosque is crowned by three large sandstone domes distinguished by their zigzag bands of marble. It has well-balanced proportions and a courtyard surrounded by cloisters on three of its sides and the prayer chamber on its western side. Jami Masjid is beautifully decorated with paintings, inlaid stones, carvings and glazed tiles. The building comprises of pillared Dalan, a beautiful 'Chhajja' and the 'Chhatri' on the roof. The main Iwan of the building is rather simple and contains a central arch with geometrical designs.

National Chambal (Gharial) Wildlife Sanctuary

The National Chambal (Gharial) Wildlife Sanctuary in India was founded in 1979 and is part of a large area co-administered by the states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, within an area of 5,400 square kilometres along the Chambal River. Approximately 400 km of the river is within the reserve, forming the core area. Apart from the Ganges River Dolphin (Platanista gangetica), the other inhabitants of the sanctuary include magar (crocodile) and gharial (Gavialis gangeticus). Stretch of crystal clear water also supports Marsh Crocodile, Smooth-coated Otters (Lutrogale perspicillata), 6 species of Terrapins/Turtles plus 250 species of birds. Migratory birds from Siberia forms its rich avian fauna.One of the rare bird present here is Indian Skimmers. Black-bellied Terns, Red-crested Pochard and Ferruginous Pochard, Bar-headed Goose, Sarus Crane, Great Thick-knee, Indian Courser, Pallas's Fish Eagle, Pallid Harrier, Greater Flamingos and Lesser Flamingos, Darters, and Brown Hawk Owl and many other birds are part of the sanctuary's rich fauna.The sanctuary is protected under India's Wildlife Protection Act 1972.

Life Inside The Forest
Only means of transportation inside the forest is by boat. There is no road or no trail of a path anywhere! The wood-cutters make temporary dwellings at the edge of the forest at a height of 8-10 feet for fear of wild animals, others live on boats. In the Chandpai region it is fascinating to see the nomadic fishermen (living with families on boats) catching fish with the help of trained otter. Exciting activities take place in Dublar Char in the forest when fishermen from Chittagong gather for four months (mid Oct. to mid Feb. ) to catch and dry fish. But the most daring and exciting fall activities is presented by the honey-collectors who work in groups for just two months (April-May) and it is interesting to see how they locate a hive and then collect honey.

The Park lies on Frances Bay in Port Darwin, and includes the western bank of Sadgroves Creek, Reichardt Creek and part of Blessers Creek. Housing and industrial estates are its neighbours.

Although this Park is new, the land has history. Shell middens in the area show that Aboriginal people have used the land for thousands of years. Today, the Larrakia people speak for this land.

Mongolian horse riding adventures:

What better way to see Mongolia than as the locals do, by horse ? Chinggis Khaan and his armies travelled to Europe by horse, and to this day it remains the most common and reliable form of transport. Horses can go where roads and petrol do not exist, and where walkers would be exhausted by the rough terrain. Most nomadic families have a herd of horses, the size of the herd being a status symbol. In the summer months mare's milk is fermented to make "airag", a drink which is much loved by all Mongolians and drunk in huge quantities. A good horse would be a man's most prized possession, and all animals are well cared for.

On our horse riding tours we take with us local horsemen to look after the animals. The nomadic people, who have probably been riding since they were two years old, use wooden saddles, sometimes finely decorated with big silver studs. For foreigners these are like a form of torture, therefore we use English or Russian style saddles. We try to find horses that are suited to your riding experience, and the distance and speed at which you ride can be adapted to suit you.

Antarctica holiday cruise:

With visits along the way through the South Shetland Islands we arrive on the mainland, on the Antarctic Peninsula and are dazzled by perhaps the most dramatic scenery to be found anywhere on earth. Sailing aboard a well-appointed expedition vessel, we see Antarctic nature in all its glory. These areas boast an extraordinary abundance of wildlife, including five seal species and massive penguin rookeries of gentoo, Adelies and chinstraps as well as a profusion of seabirds from albatross to skuas. A wildlife highlight may well be watching a variety of magnificent whale species in close proximity as they crest the surface of the waves.

On the White Continent, we also see remarkable landscapes of ice. We’ll even have the chance to camp ashore on this expanse of ice if conditions are suitable. Even in the company of our experienced expedition crew, some of whom have travelled to Antarctica over 100 times, it still seems astonishing to think of the early explorers attempting to conquer this beautiful, yet formidable land.

Spitsbergen cruise to the Arctic:

This voyage delivers a full circumnavigation of Spitsbergen and its off-lying islands (dependent on ice conditions), taking us within 600 nautical miles of the North Pole. With its population of 3500 in five settlements, Spitsbergen is still virtually an unspoilt wilderness.

The east coast is influenced by a cold sea current from Siberia and the resulting lower temperatures mean that, even in summer, frequent pack ice can make access difficult. In contrast the west coast is warmed by the Gulf Stream where an amazing variety of flora thrives. This polar wonderland is also the breeding home for walrus, polar bear, reindeer and millions upon millions of migratory land and sea birds. Several whale species are found in the waters surrounding Spitsbergen. The land is a bewitching combination of towering mountains in the west and fossil-rich polar desert in the east.

Antarctic diving expedition

This expedition will focus on some of the best dive sites in the Antarctic Peninsula. We can take just 24 divers on this voyage and who will enjoy guidance from an onboard team of diving professionals who are pioneers in polar diving. This expedition does not involve cutting a hole in the ice to dive. Using zodiac inflatables we will dive off the edges of ice flows and around icebergs where we so hope to see sealions and leopard seals. Marine life on the Peninsula also includes kelp walls, sea-snails, crabs, sea butterflies, shoals of Antarctic fish, shrubby horsetails, jellyfish, sea hedgehogs, starfishes, krill and giant isopods. New species are being discovered in Antarctica all the time.

The ice itself forms one of the special features of diving in Antarctica. At times we will dive beneath shallow pack ice and at other times dive alongside great walls of ice to feel and observe their extraordinary forms. The Sossusvlie

Namibia's famous highlight in the heart of the Namib Desert, is a huge clay pan, enclosed by giant sand dunes. Some of the spectacular hills of sand are, at a height of 300 metres, the highest in the world. Only after a heavy rainfall, which is a rare event in this area, does the vlei fill with water. As the clay layers hardly allow any water infiltration, a turquoise lake will remain for quite some time.
The dunes of the Namib desert have developed over a period of many millions of years. It is thought that the vast quantities of sand were deposited into the Alantic Ocean by the Orange river. This material was subsequently moved northwards by the Benguela current to be dumped back onto the land by the surf.

Harnas Wildlife Foundation:

Harnas farm which was once a cattle farm has become a sanctuary for injured and orphaned animals by the owners. Later Harnas Wildlife Foundation has been established for the purpose of supporting of activities of the orphanage and controlling of donations. The Foundation is the only animal welfare foundation of its kind in Africa.

Harnas Lion, Leopard and Cheetah Farm was registered in April 1995 as a guest farm. The high costs of animal care necessitated this move. The Van der Merwe family had been taking in animals since the late 1970's and operated the farm on the income generated from cattle farming. The expenses and orphans grew quickly and by 1995, the farm housed some 200 creatures.
Since the establishment of the guest farm, Harnas has grown to become part of the public consciousness and therefore the Trust Fund and Wildlife Foundation was established during mid 1997 to control donations and monies received.
Today, Harnas operates as an animal sanctuary and orphanage. We are currently embarking on a new Wild Dog rehabilitation program which will utilize our dogs as a breeding colony.

Kolmanskop Ghost Town:

Kolmanskop is a ghost town in southern Namibia, a few kilometres inland from the port of Lüderitz. In 1908, Luederitz was plunged into diamond fever and people rushed into the Namib desert hoping to make an easy fortune. Within two years, a town, complete with a casino, school, hospital and exclusive residential buildings, was established in the barren sandy desert.

But shortly after the drop in diamond sales after the First World War, the beginning of the end started. During the 1950's the town was deserted and the dunes began to reclaim what was always theirs.

Desert Express:

Desert Express was designed and built in Namibia, and it took 250 000 manhours during a period of 18 months to complete the construction of the train. The workforce consisted of 40 skilled artisans, 3 supervisors, 2 technical superintendents and 2 senior engineers. Where possible, Namibian products and skills were used. Desert Express was launched on 3 April 1998 by the President of Namibia, Dr Sam Nujoma.

Spitzkoppe / Erongo:

The Spitzkoppe between Usakos and Swakopmund is also described as the "Matterhorn of Namibia". Rising to a altitude of about 1800 metres, the Spitzkoppe is by no means Namibia's highest mountain, however, due to its striking outlines, it is regarded as the most well-known mountain in the country. Situated in an endless, dry plain, the island of mountains can be seen from far away.

The granite massif, which is part of the Erongo Mountains, was created by the collapse of a gigantic volcano more than 100 million years ago and the subsequent erosion, which exposed the volcanic rock, granite.

Cheetah Conservation Fund:

Founded in 1990, the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) has as its mission is to be an internationally recognised centre of excellence in research and education on cheetahs and their eco-systems, working with all stakeholders to achieve best practice in the conservation and management of the world's cheetahs.

The CCF is based in Namibia, the country with the largest and healthiest population of cheetahs left in the world. Its Research and Education Centre is located 44 km. east of Otjiwarongo.

Fjords and Mountains (western Norway)

Sailing into the Norwegian fjords, you find yourself in a landscape that very few places can offer. You sit on deck and glide through the majestic scenery, with steep cliffs towering over you on both sides. High above you, water and glaciers form beautiful waterfalls that dance down the almost vertical mountainsides.

Beneath you swims what could be dinner. You cast your line into the fjord and seabirds flap around the boat as you reel in the freshest of mackerel. On narrow rock ledges stand small, abandoned crofts, testament to the tough and lonely life lived here until recently.

The Lofoten Islands

On the tip of Lofoten you find the island of Røst and many other islands, islets and reefs. These are home of the largest number of nesting birds in Norway, with approximately one quarter of the country's seabird population. Visit the Skomvær Lighthouse - the final outpost overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

Besides, Moskenes has plenty to offer for those who want a date with the natural elements. A boat trip through Moskstrømmen, characterized as one of the most fiercest and dangerous maelstroms in the world, brings you to the "outside" of Lofoten. Here you find traces of settlements dating thousands of years back in time. The gigantic Kollhellaren Cave in Refsvika is a coastal cavern with approximately 3,000-year-old cave paintings.

The Arctic

Arctic Norway is the kingdom of light. In the summer, the sun never sets. It is a surreal feeling, walking around the spectacular countryside in sunlight at three in the morning. The mountains form a magical backdrop against a sky that lights up with spectacular colours.

Sometimes the northern lights come all together, dancing across the sky, orange, purple, green and sunset red. Other times they are simply curtains of computer-screen green or a twister of wispy light. The northern lights are never the same twice.

And as the seasons change, the sun disappears permanently for the winter. The climate shifts between harmony and wildness, and the magical Northern Lights dance across the sky.

Whale of a time in Vesteralen

A fountain of water stands up in the air only 30 metres away and you can make out the size of the 15 – 16 metres long animal in the water, as it glides slowly forward for a while.

Then the captain shouts “diving!” and the whale arches his back, lifts his big fluke (his tail) and disappears again into the deep accompanied by the sounds of ecstatic children, clicking cameras and an applauding international audience.

King crab safaris in Northern Norway

You too can join the professional divers under water if you have a divers’ license. But most guests are content with seeing the big monster from ashore or a boat as it is surfaced and put into the boiling pot. Not surprisingly really, as the red king crab can reach two metres between the claws and weigh up to 15 kilos. A snap of its claw is enough to remove a man's finger.

Soviet scientists introduced the red king crab to the Murmanskfjord near the border with Norway in the 1960s. The scientists wanted to increase the yield from local fisheries. Since then, millions of crustaceans have spread west into Norwegian waters.

Mountains and wilderness

Norway and Svalbard (Spitsbergen) consist of large areas of unspoilt nature and vast tracts of wilderness. These are unique natural habitats that we want to protect without human encroachment, be it in the form of fencing or official signs.

Norway is also a long, drawn out country where weather conditions along the coast or in the mountains can change at the drop of a hat. It is therefore important that you as a tourist are aware of the forces of nature and that you take with you the necessary gear for surviving in the countryside.

The Victoria Falls Bridge was commissioned by Cecil John Rhodes in 1900, although he never visited the falls and died before construction began, he expressed his wish that the "railway should cross the Zambezi just below the Victoria Falls. I should like to have the spray of the falls over the carriages."

The bridge affords a magnificent view both down the gorge on the one side and through to the falls on the other. The immense depth of the gorge can be fully appreciated from this perspective and combined with the sea green river below, the shiny black rock face and lush green foliage, the 360 degree view from the bridge is breathtaking.

CHIMFUNSHI--CHIMPANZEE SANCTUARY AND
ANIMAL ORPHANAGE:

On the headwaters of the Kafue River, sixty kilometers west of Chingola, lies the Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage. Aside from Chimpanzees, Chimfunshi does have a host of other animals benefiting from the care of David and Sheila Siddle.

Chimfunshi is now home to over fifty chimpanzees housed in two enclosures - one walled and the other solar power electric fencing - with cages for the new introductions. But Chimfunshi is outgrowing itself. Plans for the acquisition of more land have developed into the formation of the Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage Trust.

THE ZAMBEZI RIVER

The Zambezi is Africa’s fourth largest River system, after the Nile, Zaire and Niger Rivers. It runs through six countries on it’s journey from central Africa to the Indian Ocean. Its unique value is that it is less developed than others in terms of human settlement and many areas along it’s banks enjoy protected status.

It's power has carved the spectacular Victoria Falls and the zigzagging Batoka Gorge.

The Zambezi has been harnessed at various points along the way including the massive Kariba Dam between Zambia and Zimbabwe and Cabora Bassa Dam in Mozambique. Plans for another dam at the Batoka gorge have fortunately been shelved.

The River’s beauty has attracted tourists from all over the world providing opportunities for a myriad of water sports and game viewing.

LAKE KARIBA

Lake Kariba is Zambia's undiscovered Riveira ! It offers spectacular views, stunning sunsets, great ishing, boating opportunities, water sports or wonderful relaxing holidays or weekends just soaking up the sunshine.

The weather here is mostly sunny and fine. It can get quite hot in mid summer, but even mid winter days are warm and the nights are balmy.

This is Africa's largest man made dam, 226km long and in places up to 40 km wide. It provides considerable electric power to both Zambia and Zimbabwe and supports a thriving commercial fishing industry. The sheer size of it makes one forget it's a dam and in certain places it almost feels like an ocean!

VON LETTOW VORBECK MEMORIAL

At the North end of the Chambeshi River bridge on the main road from Mpika to Kasama, marks the spot on which General Von Lettow Vorbeck, Commander of the German forces in East Africa during the 1914 war, surrendered. Incorporated in the monument is an 1890 breach loading field gun of the type used by the German army in this campaign.

In 1914, Lettow-Vorbeck was appointed the commander of the small German garrison of 3000 soldiers and twelve Askari companies in German East Africa, the mainland part of modern-day Tanzania. With the beginning of the war in August, knowing the need to seize the initiative, he ignored orders from Berlin and the colony's governor Dr. Heinrich Schnee. Schnee had insisted on neutrality for German East Africa.

SUMBU NATIONAL PARK

Lying on the southern shores of Lake Tanganyika in the Northern most tip of Zambia, Sumbu National Park covers an area of just over 2000 square kilometers encompassing 100kms of some of the most pristine shores of this vast Lake. Its beauty ranges from sandy beaches, vertical cliffs, rocky coves and natural bays to the rugged hills and deep valleys of the interior. The Lufubu River winds its way through a valley flanked by 300 meter escarpments on either side.

The western boundary of Nsumbu National Park is buffered by Tondwa Game Management Area, an IUCN Category VIII Multiple Use Management Area of 54,000 ha. The much larger Kaputa Game Management Area (360,000 ha) is also contiguous with the National Park to the north-west and south-west therefore, with the National Park, completely surrounding Tondwa. Sumbu National Park and the two Game Management Areas thus form important parts of a network of Protected Areas in Zambia.

KASANKA NATIONAL PARK

This peaceful sanctuary, situated on the south western edge of the Lake Bangweulu basin, is one of Zambia’s smallest national parks. It's 450 km2 however, are so well endowed with rivers, lakes and wetlands, forests, lagoons, meadows and dambos that it supports a uniquely wide range of animals and abundant birds and fish.

Do not expect to see large herds of animals round every corner, but it is surely one of the most picturesque parks in Zambia with superb birdlife.

About ten years ago Kasanka was in danger of becoming yet another defunct national park due to rampant poaching. David Lloyd, a British expatriate, who had lived in Zambia for many years visited the park in 1985 and heard the crack of gunshots. He concluded that if there was still poaching there must still be animals there and set out to save the park from total depletion.

Home of the legends of the vampires, Transylvania is a beautiful and historic region in central-western Romania. A good starting point is the city of Cluj-Napoca, once the capital of Transylvania and one of the most important academic, cultural and industrial centers in Romania today. From the Middle Ages onwards, the city of Cluj has been a multicultural city with a diverse cultural and religious life. Some things you will want to see are the Avram Iancu Square with the Orthodox Cathedral, the National Theatre, the Romanian Opera and the Avram Iancu Statue; the botanical garden; and the symmetrical Maniu Street.

3. South Korea

South Korea is not a particularly common holiday destination, but in my own experience, it is a great country to visit. If you stay in Seoul you can visit the DMZ (The Demilitarized Zone) - a section of land between North and South Korea which is a no-mans land. You can visit the tunnels that were built by the North Koreans in the hopes that they could be used for a sneak invasion of Korea (this happened after the Korean war incidentally), and you can use binoculars to look across the DMZ to see North Korean soldiers manning their side of the region - it is very eerie but amazingly cool. South Korea also has some incredible food - such as their famous Korean Barbeque, and be sure to try out kimchi (a fermented side-dish) - loved by all Koreans and many non-Koreans. Did you know that when Koreans have their photographs taken they often say “Kimchi!” in much the same way as Westerners say “Cheese!”?

This city in Morocco is not the most unusual on the list as it is a fairly popular holiday destination, but it is overlooked by so many people that it deserves a place here. Tangiers is a city with a brilliantly colorful past. From the 1920s it was an International Zone which made it virtually lawless, and in this climate many great writers (namely William Burroughs, Jack Kerouac, Tennessee Williams, and Paul Bowles) lived there. After the Second World War the city was reunited with Morocco. The city is a multicultural mecca and is situated across the strait from Gibraltar. Tangier has been reputed as a safe house for international spying activities and is home to one of the worlds largest private investigations company in the world. A railroad line connects the city with Rabat, Casablanca and Marrakech in the south and Fès and Oujda in the east.

5. Mongolia

Mongolia contains very little arable land as much of its area is covered by arid and unproductive steppes with mountains to the north and west and the Gobi Desert to the south. Approximately thirty percent of the country’s 2.8 million people are nomadic or semi-nomadic. This is where the holiday comes in - you can take a horse trek across the steppes following the same paths that generations of nomadic tribes have taken, or across the desert. The Gobi Steppe Ride is supported by camel carts and ventures south through treeless steppes and semi arid areas towards the desert. Both rides take you into areas where there are no fences, no tracks and no telegraph poles; the only sign of human activity are the nomadic herders you meet along the way. This is a truly unspoilt land and it is almost unbeatable as a holiday destination for those who love the great outdoors.

Tibet is becoming a much more popular tourist destination now that the Communist government of China are promoting tourism; nevertheless, it is still a place worth visiting because of the fascinating history of turmoil that has best the nation. If you are lucky, you may even have the opportunity to see an authentic Tibetan Sky Burial - keep away from those vultures though!

A truly cultural experience with a North Pole touch! Tour the Polar museum in St. Petersburg, visit with reindeer herders in the Siberian village of Khatanga, excursion to Taymur Nature Reserve, barbecue at the taiga border in the picturesque valley of Kotuy River and of course…stand on the North Pole! If you are lucky, you might even get to see Santa having a wee break after the Christmas rush. Oh - and maybe next year you can do Antarctica so you can tell your friends you have stood on both poles.

Some of the many things you can do in Papua New Guinea are visit markets, festivals, diving, surfing, hiking, fishing and see amazing unique flora and fauna. The markets are a definite must-see: along with local foods, arts and crafts are often on display and can be purchased for reasonable prices. Some of the items on display are traditional carvings and beadwork, traditional and contemporary paintings on canvas and traditionally woven baskets and serving trays. If you do decide to travel to Papua New Guinea, you would be well advised that there is a great deal of violence and crime there, and women should not travel unaccompanied.

You might think that an immense rainforest would be a bulwark against extinction, but several species of turtles in the Amazon Basin are facing severe threats from development, hunting, and habitat loss. The Amazon turtle (Podocnemis expansa), a huge creature reaching 60 kilograms, and the smaller Tracajá turtle (Podocnemis unifilis) are hunted for their eggs, meat, oil, and shells. What’s more, these endangered species also depend on the river beaches to nest, and hydroelectric dams and river navigation projects threaten to flood critical nesting sites. If conservation is your thing, this is the holiday of a lifetime. What a great opportunity to see beautiful rainforests and the Amazon River - just be careful if you go swimming - there are some rather nasty creatures in that water.

4. Le Chateau
The best reason to visit the chateau is for the spectacular panoramic view of the city and sea. You won't actually see much of a castle (only a few sections of it remain). You can take the elevator up for a nominal price or hike up the stairs for free to the park atop the hill. Be sure to bring your camera.The hill is covered by a shady park full of Mediterranean essences, with an ornamental waterfall, and offers an exceptional panorama over Nice and its surroundings. Little remains of the old fortress except the relics of the Cathédrale Santa Maria de l'Assompta.

The Chimborazo

It was not that easy to reach Quito with all these strikes everywhere ! Backpacked for at least a one year travel, I find myself in a deserted parisian subway station, a telescreen spatting "No traffic" (thanks, Douve !) he and her client accept my intrusion. Then, the impossible journey begins, and I spare you all its details : I arrive at the airport with only one quarter to take off time. At this point, *** happens again : due to the strikes, the flight Paris-Madrid is delayed, what means I am very unlikely to get the connexion for Caracas. I call Stef and tell her to change her flight ticket in order not to arrive before me, as agreed.. and finally, the flight to Caracas is held back in Madrid for a few persons... and me ! Stef has already changed her ticket, what means one more day in solo in Quito for me.

Cuenca Rainbow, Ecuador

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Cuenca, Ecuador

Just as I was giving up on having interesting light for this shot, the clouds to the West opened up and poured golden light over the entire scene, and created an unbelievable rainbow.

I didn't even have to move to get the rainbow to line up with the cathedral.

The connexion Caracas-Quito is a bit shaking (hey, Aeropostal !) and my sleeping bag did not make it through, though well fixed (or too much for a mere sleeping bag...). At last, I arrive at the hostel and I fell easily asleep at 1 in the morning (8 AM Paris Time) to wake up 5 hours later with the sunrise !

"Three Galaxies and a Comet"

This image reveals the majestic scene along the Southern Milky Way. The image shows beautiful stars and dark nebulae. The image spans a 100 degrees wide and is a compilation of 13 images taken with a camera angle of 100 x 100 degrees. Seen in the foreground is the terrain of Patagonia, Argentina. This images allows us to get a better look at the Southern part of our very own galaxy.
However, the image also allows us to see two irregular shaped galaxies. We see two satellite galaxies the Large and Small Magellanic clouds. These are dwarf galaxies, the large is 180,000 light-years away and spans about 15,000 light-years. The small also spans about 15,000 light-years and is about 210,000 light-years away.
Lastly, the image reveals the tail of the McNaught Comet.

The Cotopaxi Blues

Cotopaxi is a stratovolcano in the Andes Mountains, located about 75 kilometres (50 mi) south of Quito, Ecuador, South America.[2] It is the second highest summit in the country, reaching a height of 5,897 m.

Cotopaxi has an almost symmetrical cone that rises from a highland plain of about 3,800 metres (12,500 ft), with a width at its base of about 23 kilometres (14 mi).[3] It has one of the few equatorial glaciers in the world, which starts at the height of 5,000 metres (16,400 ft). The mountain is clearly visible on the skyline from Quito.[2] It is part of the chain of volcanoes around the Pacific plate known as the Pacific Ring of Fire.

The volcano is the subject of 1855 and 1862 paintings by Frederic Edwin Church.

Paleontological Museum in Trelew, Argentina:

It was a surprise to find a full-featured, well put-together dinosaur museum pretty much in the middle of nowhere, and even more of a surprise to find it showing a BBC Horizon documentary from 2002 about the hunt for dinosaurs in the empty spaces of Patagonia.

The programme detailed how researchers in Trelew were searching for the “missing link” from the mid-Jurassic period that could help explain if dinosaurs developed according to Darwinian theories of evolution.

Getting to Argentina

Air Argentina has excellent worldwide air connections, with Aeropuerto Internacional Ezeiza (35km/22mi outside Buenos Aires) the main international airport. A departure tax of USD $23.50 (plus 21% IVA) is payable on international flights; the tax is USD $5.00 (plus 21% IVA) on flights to Uruguay. Note that all taxes and costs will be up in the air until the monetary crisis sorts itself out.

Land
If you're arriving at the Ezeiza airport, you have several options for getting into Buenos Aires. If you're alone your best bet is taking a comfortable shuttle bus (they're right outside the customs exit) for about USD $8.50; avoid these companies' taxis as they're overpriced. For taxi service head to the city's booth (just behind the shuttle bus stands); a ride into the centre should be around USD $15.00. Avoid taxi touts. One of the driest inhabitable spots of earth this is a popular destination for both overseas and homegrown tourists alike. Its attraction lies in its easygoing atmosphere, stunning setting on the banks of the Nile, palm groves, Elephantine Island and huge dam.

Aswan is a popular Egyptian winter resort; the summer months of May-October are hot with highs of 41C; the winter months of November-April are mild with temperatures dipping to 10C.

Dakhla Oasis:

Dakhla Oasis is one of the oases in the Western Desert region of Egypt. It is situated more than 100 m above sea level and numerous springs and ponds form a part of its topography.

Agra, The City of Love:
Agra's climate is tropical and prone to extremes, reaching as high as 45ºC (113ºF) during the summer and as low as 4ºC (40ºF) in the winter. The city is dirty and polluted. There are crowds everywhere and the exhaust fumes threaten to choke you. The rainy season is between June and September and the city receives annual rainfall of 660 millimeters (26 inches). But one look at the Taj Mahal and you forget everything else. I stood in a queue for half an hour and was frisked before entering the complex but did not mind the waiting at all once I set my eyes at mausoleum. It’s is beyond beautiful and no pictures can do justice to its perfect symmetry. It towers above all, and the marble changes colour with the passage of the day. I roamed the lawns and the fountains and took pictures from what seemed thousands vantage points.

Kerala, The Land of Trees:

Kerala is a green strip of land, in the South West corner of Indian peninsula. It has only 1.1 8 per cent of the total area of the country but houses 3.43% of the the country's population. Kerala is a land of rivers and backwaters.

There are a thousand things that you can do like embark on an enchanting journey on the speckled backwaters on a kettuvallom, a fully furnished traditional rice boat, venture in to the very heart of the paddy fields, on narrow dykes with water passage running through the muddy path, cross water bodies with extremely narrow bridges or watch the natives do so. You can even drift across cheerful and colourful banks in a country raft or tread a treadmill used for irrigation even today.

Rajasthan, The Desert Fortress:

Rajasthan is a vibrant, exotic state where tradition and royal glory meet in a riot of colors against the vast backdrop of sand and desert. It has an unusual diversity in its entire forms- people, customs, culture, costumes, music, manners, dialects, cuisine and physiography. The land is endowed with invincible forts, magnificent palace havelis, rich culture and heritage, beauty and natural resources. It is a land rich in music, Dance, Art & Craft and Adventure, a land that never ceases to intrigue & enchant.

In the west, Rajasthan is relatively dry and infertile; this area includes some of the Thar Desert, also known as the Great Indian Desert. Jim Corbett National Park:

Corbett, the first national park and tiger reserve in India, is located in the valley of the Ramganga River near the foothills of the Himalayas. Its proximity to Delhi and its wildlife make it a must visit destination for residents and guests tempted to go beyond the capital of India. While visiting Corbett you would be able to stay right within it at Dhikala and other forest rest house.
For birdwatchers, there are over 580 species to view; moreover you can also view reptiles such as turtles and gharial. All of which make Corbett one of the most complete wildlife experiences, besides being close enough to them without any hesitation.
Tourists are only allowed restricted entry by permit into about 100km of the tiger reserve area. You can enter them through Dhikala from the Dhangarhi gate, Bijrani from the Amdanda gate and Jhirna from the Dhela gate. Permission to enter the park are issued at the Tourist Reception Centre or the park’s entrance gate at Dhangarhi for Dhikala which is also the main center of activity in the park.
Visitors must move around in the park by car or jeep, accompanied by a licensed guide and most important walking is strictly prohibited and if found you will be arrested. There are few private resorts spread out and the forest department also provides few rest houses in the reserve area. Entry fee for Indians is Rs 30; foreigners Rs. 350, for elephant ride Indians Rs. 100, foreigners Rs 200 and a licensed guide Rs. 75 per trip.

Darjeeling:

If you are setting out to see Darjeeling, make sure that the hotel you have chosen does not have a water shortage. Surely, when you are on holiday you need to have some basic amenities. Here again, the tourist traffic is so much that you may feel the need to take a break from your holiday break. Quite often, instead of seeing the sunrise on Kanchenjunga from Tiger Hill, all you get see is a traffic jam, as everyone is headed in the same direction as you are. Visual pollution is on the rise in this hill station.

Leaving the grey-brown land, the plane was over the majestic Bay of Bengal within seconds. I felt enveloped in a sphere of blue as the versatile shades of the skies met those of the sea. The sun was just making its presence felt as it cast its magical colours. At that point of time, there was nothing between me and bliss -- except my tiny aircraft window.

Floating in splendid isolation, east of the Indian mainland, is the archipelago of 572 emerald islands called Andaman and Nicobar. Once a hill range extending from Burma to Indonesia, these Indian islands are home to 400,000 Indians, 200,000 of whom live in the capital town, Port Blair alone. Though these islands stretch over an area of more than 700 kms, from north to south, only 36 of the 572 islands are inhabited.

There are two distinct inhabitants of the islands. The 'Indians' and the 'Natives'. The Indians are mainly from Madras, Calcutta and Punjab. The Rose Pink City founded by Maharaja Jai Singh II (1693-1743), is the capital of Rajasthan. It is a major attraction for the first-time visitor. Places of Interest:

1)Sundarbans
Located at about 320km. West of Dhaka. Here in the south, spread over an area of about 6000 sq. km. of delta swamps along the coastal belt of Khulna is the biggest mangrove forest, Sundarbans (beautiful forest) - the home of the Royal Bengal Tiger. These dense mangrove forests are criss-crossed by a network of rivers and creeks. One find here tides flowing in two directions in the same creek and often tigers swimming across a river or huge crocodiles basking in the sun. Other wildlife in this region is cheetahs, spotted deer, monkeys, pythons, wild bears and hyenas.

The Sundarbans is the largest mangrove forest in the world's. And as it is the unusual forest, UNESCO listed it as World Heritage Site

The forest is accessible by river from Khulna and Mongla. There are rest houses for the visitors to stay and enjoy the unspoiled nature with all its charm and majesty. Spending some times inside the forest can be a rare treat for the lovers of nature. BPC offers package tours to Sundarbans.

2)Paharpur

In Paharpur, a small village 5 km. west of Jamalganj railway station in the greater Rajshahi district, the remains of the most important and the largest known monastery south of the Himalayas has bee excavated. This 8th century A.D. archaeological find covers approximately an area of 27 acres of land. The entire establishment occupies a quadrangular court, measuring more than 900 ft. and from 12fh to 15ft. in height with elaborate gateway complex on the north. There are 45 cells on the north and 44 in each of other three sides with a total number of 177 rooms. The architecture of the pyramidal cruciform temple is profoundly influenced by those of South-East Asia, especially Myanmar and Java. It had taken its name from a high mound, which looked like pahar or hillock. A site museum built recently houses the representative coactions of objects recovered from the area. The excavated findings have also been preserved at the Veranda Research museum at Rajshahi. The antiquities of the museum include terracotta plaques, images of different gods and goddesses, potteries, coins, inscriptions, ornamental bricks and other minor clay objects . It has been declared as a World Heritage site by UNESCO.

3)Tamabil & Jaflong

Situated amidst splendid panorama, Tamabil is a border outpost on Sylhet-Shilong road, about 55 km. away from Sylhet town. Beside enchanting views of the area one can also have a glimpse of the waterfall across the border from Tamabil. Jaflong is also a scenic spot nearby amidst tea gardens and rare beauty of rolling stones from hills.

4)Mainamati

An isolated low, dimpled range of hills, dotted -with more than 50 ancient Buddhist settlements of the 8th to 12th century A.D. known as Mainamati-Laimai range are extended through the centre of the district of Comilla.

Salban Vihara, almost in the middle of the Mainamati-Lalmai hill range consists of 115 cells, built around a spacious courtyard with cruciform temple in the centre facing its only gateway complex to the north resembling that of the Paharpur Monastery.

Kotila Mura situated on a flaftened hillock, about 5 km north of Salban Vihara inside the Comilla Cantonment are is picturesque Buddhist establishment. Here three stupas are found side by side representing the Buddhist "Trinity" or three jewels i.e. the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha.

The Mainamati site Museum has a rich and varied collection of copper plates, gold and silver coins and 86 bronze objects. Over 150 bronze statues havo been recovered mostly from the monastic cells, bronze stupas, stone sculptures and hundreds of terracotta plaques each measuring on an average of 9" higli and 8" to 12" wide. Mairiamati is only 114 km. from Dhaka City and is just a day's trip by road on way to Chittagong.

5)Jamuna Resort

The resort located on the eastern bank of mighty river Jamuna and near the Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge is an important installation of the country and perhaps aa extremely beautiful place.

Being developed over 1,200 bighas of land about 100 kilometres from the capital, the resort has 130 air-conditioned suites in 70 cottages, auditorium, conference rooms and dining facilities.

Cox's Bazar

Located at a distance of 152 km. to the south of Chittagong, Cox's Bazar is the tourist capital of Bangladesh. That perhaps makes kuakata one of the world's unique beaches. The long and wide beach at Kuakata has a typical natural setting. This sandy beach has gentle slopes into the Bay of Bengal and bathing there is as pleasant as is walking or diving. Kuakata is truly a virgin beach-a sanctuary for migratory winter birds, a series of coconut trees, sandy beach of blue Bay, a feast for the eye. Forest, boats plying in the Bay of Bengal with colourful sails, fishing, towering cliffs, surfing waves everything here touches every visitor's heart.

The unique customs and costumes of the 'Rakhyne' tribal families and Buddhist Temple of about hundred years old indicate the ancient tradition and cultural heritage, which are objects of great pleasure Kuakata is the place of pilgrimage of the Hindus and Buddhist communities. Innumerable devotees arrive here at the festival of 'Rush Purnima' and 'Maghi Purnima'. On these two days they take holy bath and traditional fairs are held here. Himchari

The scenic beauty one can see while driving from Cox’s Bazar to Himchhari- is quite extraordinary, with lovely green hills on the left and the blue waves just on the right.

It is about 32 km. South of Cox's Bazar along the beach, a nice place for picnic and shooting. The famous "Broken Hills" and waterfalls here are rare sights.

Inani

It is about 32 km. South of Cox's Bazar and just on the beach, with the sea to the west and a background of steep hills to the east. Inani casts a magic spell on those who step into that dreamland. It is only half an hour's drive from Cox's Bazar and an ideal place for Sea-bathing and picnic.

Maheskhali

An island off the coast of Cox's Bazar. It has an area of 268 square kilometers. Through the centre of the island and along the eastern coast line rises a range of low hills, 300 feet high; but the coast to the west and north is a lowlying treat, fringed by mangrove jungle. In the hills on the coast is built the shrine of Adinath, dedicated to siva. By its side on the same hill is Buddhist Pagoda.

Ramu

This is a typical Buddhist village, about 16 km. from Cox's Bazar, on the main road to Chittagong. There are monasteries, khyangs and pagodas containing images of Buddha in gold, bronze and other metals inilaid with precious stones.

One of the most interesting of these temples is on the bank of the Baghkhali river. It houses not only interesting relics and Burmes handicrafts but also a large bronze statue of Buddha measuring thirteen feet high and rests on a six feet high pedestal. The wood carving of this khyang is very delicate and refined.

The village has a charm of its own. Weavers ply there trade in open workshops and craftsmen make handmade cigars in their pagoda like houses.

Sonadia Island

It is about seven kilometer of Cox's Bazar and about nine square kilometer in area. The western side of the island is sandy and different kinds of shells are found on the beach. Off the northern part of the island, there are beds of window pane oysters. During winter, fisherman set up temporary camps on the island and dry their catches of sea fish.

Teknaf :

Southernmost tip of Bangladesh, Teknaf situated on the Naaf river and just at the end of the hilly regions of the district. Mayanmar is on the opposite bank of Naaf river. Wild animals and birds are available but the most interesting thing is a journey on the river. Wide sandy beach in the backdrop of high hills with green forests is an enchanting scene never to be forgotten.

Foy's Lake, Chittagong:

Foy's Lake was dug in 1924 and was named after the Railway engineer Foy. It is beautiful, serene, blue, surrounded by lush, green hills, symbolizing Chittagong's eternal image, and has thus been the subject of an amusement park, headed by Concord, the makers of the world-class Fantasy Kingdom amusement park in Dhaka, and Bangladesh's largest construction company,

Nature has favoured Chittagong city, like the entire district, with many natural springs. The sources of most of these springs are to be found in the hill ranges. The water from these springs is used for irrigation purposes as well as to supply drinking water. In the city proper there are a number of springs, which are bounded by concrete walls by the Municipal authorities and supply drinking water.

Brazil can provide a holiday adventure like no other, pulsating with the energetic tropical vibe of a sexy, joyous people living in romantic cities such as Rio de Janeiro or in the immense dark heart of the Amazon.

This is a great country for backpackers on a shoestring budget seeking a cheap vacation as it's possible to survive on less than US$20 a day. If you have enough money to enjoy yourself, budget about US$50 a day for food, travel, accommodation and entertainment.

History:

The Brazilian currency is called the "real" and its ongoing devaluation since the late 1990s has made Brazil holiday tickets increasingly cheap for travelers.

Brazil uses metric measurements and tourists should be cautious about electricity supplies as the current is mostly 110 or 120 volts. Currents vary from 100 to 240 volts and power surges happen occasionally, so be careful with any electrical appliances you bring into Brazil during your holiday travel through South America.

Climate

Brazil's climate is mostly warm and comfortable throughout the year but the south of Brazil is very hot and sticky from December to February and experiences non-stop rain from June to August.

The famous five-day Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is usually held in February (starting at midnight on the Friday before Ash Wednesday). The Carnaval is celebrated in cities and towns throughout Brazil but none can match the Rio experience.

Although this giant street party is the biggest magnet for tourists, summer is an expensive and uncomfortable time to holiday in Brazil as the sticky heat can be unbearable and many Brazilians are on vacation, making accommodation scarce or crowded and tickets a little more expensive.

Rio is also the ultimate party town every New Year's Eve, when about a million people congregate around Copacabana Beach. Since the 1990s, Lapa in the old quarter of Rio has restored its former glory as a nightlife haven for all forms of traditional Brazilian music. If you hope to impress a member of the opposite sex while in Rio, learn at the least the basics of samba before you begin your holiday.

Places of Attraction

The city's fanatical beach culture is centred on Copacabana Beach, a 4.5 kilometre stretch of white sand backed by high-rise apartments. Small bikinis are the norm and women in one-piece bathers are usually assumed to be tourists. Beware the water currents and don't take valuables or more money than you need to the Rio beaches.

A must-see is the famous Christ the Redeemer statue overlooking Rio from Corcovado hill. The statue is 30 metres high and weighs more than a thousand tonnes, overlooking one of the world's great vistas. Most hotels have organised tours to the Corcovado and a taxi from the centre of town will cost about US$18.

Brazil is the 5th largest country in the world and huge areas remain unpopulated, although settlement is beginning to decimate some of the interior jungles.

About 30% of the world's surviving forest can be found in the Amazon basin of South America, which holds about one fifth of the world's fresh water.

Brazil's balmy north-east has almost 3,000 kilometres of virtually uninterrupted white beaches from Sao Luis to Salvador.

The country has three time zones plus daylight saving in different locations.

A dengue fever epidemic has hit Rio de Janeiro in early 2008, killing almost 70 people and infecting about 50,000 others. Forty of the dead are children aged between 5 and 12. Dengue causes high fevers, severe headaches and joint pains, and military troops have been spraying insecticide in hard-hit districts to reduce the number of mosquitoes which carry the disease. Rio suffered serious dengue outbreaks in 1986, 1995 and 2002.

Wash everything before eating, buy bottled water for drinking and use liberal doses of insect repellent as there are plenty of tropical diseases flying around which could spoil your South America vacation.

Pharmacies in Brazil, which are known as "farmacia", are mostly open Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm. The age, authenticity and quality of drugs should be closely monitored, particularly in regional areas. Staff usually don't speak English and sometimes don't have professional training.

Brazil travel tips

Visa is the most reliable credit card to have during your holiday in Brazil. Cambios (money exchangers) are widespread but it's worth cashing up to get through weekends when many close their doors.

Florence holiday guide

If you've got your airline tickets to Italy and plan travel to the northern Tuscany capital of Florence, you'll enjoy a holiday in a city regarded for centuries to be the most beautiful in the country.

You'll also be visiting a city regarded as the art capital of Europe, if not the world.

History:

Florence was founded by Julius Ceasar in 59BC but was of little consequence till the 12th century when it became a rich merchant city dominated by the dynasty of the Medici family. In the 1500s, this city was the centre of the Renaissance movement that gripped Europe.

Sunset is a great time to admire postcard views of Florence from the elevated position of the Plaza Michelangelo.

Weather:

Florence weather can be very hot during summer. Evenings are cold to cool most of the year and many tourists consider it best to travel to Florence during the mild Mediterranean winter when there are less foreigners in town.

The crowds and traffic can be overwhelming during the peak holiday tourist season, particularly in July and August.

Florence travel tips:

If you travel to Florence by train, the most convenient tourist office upon arrival is just outside the train station at Piazza della Stazione 4.

The domestic airport at Florence about five kilometres north-west of the city is called Amerigo Vespucci Airport (also known as Peretola).

Various European airlines fly tickets direct to Florence.

A host of international airlines have mostly European ticket connections to America.

After your flight to Florence, catch Bus 62 for a 30 minute trip to Piazza della Stazione in the central city - if you're on a budget holiday to Italy and can't afford the more expensive taxis.

The nearest major international airport is Pisa's Galileo Galilei Airport, almost 100km west of Florence, with two to three connecting trains per hour.

The Stazione Santa Maria Novella in Florence has an Air Terminal where you can check in your holiday luggage and catch a train direct to your flight.

Communication within Florence:

Most bus stations in Florence are near the train station, servicing all

Tuscany towns, much of Umbria and most major cities in Italy such as Rome.

ATAF city buses travel to destinations all over the city from 6am to 1am.

Walking is the cheapest and most convenient way to travel through Florence so you can see the city's numerous holiday tourist attractions, despite ancient, narrow and sometimes cramped sidewalks.

If you catch a train to Florence and are looking for cheap nearby holiday accommodation as soon as you arrive, check out the many budget hotels just east of the train station around Via Faenza and Via Fiume.

Accomodation:

1)Minerva--This fourth-floor apartment provides spectacular views of historic Florence.
While the apartment is found in the center of the city, guests will enjoy its peace and comfort.

3)Villa San Casciano--Staying at this spectacular 15th century Tuscan villa, only 20 minutes from Florence and right in the heart of the countryside among olive groves, vineyards and cypresses, is a truly ideal experience. Villa San Casciano is very private even though it is situated in a village where guests can walk to a café or restaurant. A private garden and parking area are at the front of the property facing the road, while the back of the villa has views of the beautiful Tuscan countryside.

4)Veduta di Montagna--Dating from the 13th century and located in a prime position for visiting Florence, Siena and the heart of Chianti, Veduta di Montagna has been cleverly restored to offer a very well-equipped family home. The 14 acres of private, landscaped gardens slope gently down to a large swimming pool nestling in the olive groves, set amidst extensive lawns bordered with flowers and the views to the Appenines and Apuan Alps are spectacular.

**The cheapest hotel accommodation we could find through a scan of several hundred Florence hotels in June 2004 was US$36. Prices were considerably higher in most other hotels.

Architectuaral Views :

Florence is a fairly small city laced with alleyways and squares, its skyline dominated by the majestic Duomo cathedral dome built by architect Brunelleschi and consecrated in 1436.

The picturesque waters of the River Arno meander through a cityscape of superb architecture, the exquisite detail of buildings dating back to medieval times and the Renaissance.

The Duomo is a massive cathedral of Romanesque and Gothic styles built between 1334 and 1887, and the building dominates the skyline of Florence. For six euros (2006), tourists can climb inside the cathedral's cupola to see the artwork of Donatello and his contemporaries, or simply look down upon Florence.

The Uffizi Gallery houses one of the most important art collections in the world and is a labyrinth of galleries, private rooms and breathtaking masterpieces.

The Duomo and the Uffizi are just a few minutes stroll from each other and a half hour walking tour will usually get you to or from most of the other major tourist venues such as the Pitti Palace and the Galleria del'Accademia where the recently restored Michelangelo statue of David can be found.

If you don't pre-book to see David, you'll find yourself waiting for an hour or two in a queue. Tourists can also be stuck in queues to the Uffizi if they don't buy tickets in advance.

Journey:

Your holiday travel to Florence is certain to lead you north of the Arno River, where most of the city and its historic sites are located.

South of the river, the Palazzo Pitti district is a living museum of great museums.

Five bridges stretch across the Arno River from central Florence to the southern district called Oltrarno. Grey cobbled stone is the dominant building and street material.

The grandest of the bridges is Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge), a three-arched span built in 1345 and lined with shops such as jewellers and goldsmiths.
The main tourist office in Florence is about three blocks north of the Duomo at Via Cavour 1r.

Environment:

There are dozens of internet cafes and web access locations throughout Florence, although prices are high.

Travel to Florence and you should protect yourself against pickpockets.

Otherwise, the city is safe to walk at night in most but not all areas.

Attractive Arts:

Perhaps the most famous art centre in Florence is the Palazzo degli Uffizi.

Better known simply as the Uffizi, this fortress building constructed in the late 16th century houses the Uffizi Gallery collection of masterpieces by artists such as Raphael, Botticelli and Titian.

The Uffizi has more great art per square centimetre than any other museum in the world, holding about 1,600 paintings in 45 rooms.

Another popular tourist attraction is, of course, the Duomo cathedral whose massive dome is the signature icon of Florence.

Travel tip ... get to the Duomo as early as possible as only limited numbers of tourists are allowed inside and long queues are common.

Expect to devote several days to exploring just a few of the city's many churches, museums and palaces. Note that there are often long entry queues of tourists waiting outside the city's numerous treasures. The crowds can be discouraging and it's wise to pick a quiet time of year for travel if you want to conveniently enjoy the city's many religious and artistic icons.

The outer fringe of Florence is a combination of suburbs, light industry and olive-bearing hills. Florence is an excellent base for tours to the Chianti wine-growing district and the city is centrally located by train within three hours of cities such as Rome, Milan, Venice and Pisa.

Tuscany is exceptionally rich and the region boasts a magnificent rolling landscape.

The best times to travel through Tuscany are April-June and September to mid-October.

Introduction:
